Ep. 13: 2022 Highlight Reel | This Week in Surgery Centers
Here’s what to expect on this week’s episode. 🎙️
Over the last three months, we have had 12 exceptional ASC leaders on our podcast. At the end of every discussion, we always ask them, “What is one thing our listeners can do this week to improve their surgery centers?” We took all 12 of their answers, tied them up in a pretty bow, and turned them into this week’s episode.
Thank you to all our listeners who spent time with us this year and our guests who took time out of their busy schedules to share their tips and insights.

[Music]
0:27
hi everyone for today’s episode we’re
0:30
going to change it up a bit from our
0:32
usual format and agenda there will be no
0:35
guest interview and no news but instead
0:38
of highlight reel of all the great
0:40
advice our most recent guests have
0:42
shared today we have had 12 amazing ASC
0:46
leaders on our podcast and at the end of
0:48
every discussion we always ask them what
0:51
is one thing our listeners can do this
0:54
week to improve their surgery centers so
0:57
we took all 12 of those answers tied
0:59
them up in a pretty bow and turned them
1:01
into this week’s episode as our holiday
1:04
gift to you and as this will be our last
1:07

1:21
needed time off we already have some
1:23
incredible guests scheduled for 2023 so
1:27
happy Holidays happy New Year and we
1:29
will see you on the other side I hope
1:32
you enjoy this Roundup of things you can
1:35
do this week to improve your surgery
1:36
center
1:40
thank you
1:42
you know to the point of data
1:44
you know run through double double check
1:47
everything that’s being put through the
1:49
the data analytics machine whatever that
1:51
is whether it’s the EMR
1:54
um or whatever software the facility
1:57
uses
1:58
um you know I think uh perhaps think of
2:00
one way to tweak uh any report to
2:05
um you know visualize the data in a
2:07
different way
2:09
um yeah I I I I I don’t want to sound
2:13
like a nerd but I think you know that
2:15
it’s really all about the the data one
2:19
exercise that we actually went through
2:20
recently that it might not necessarily
2:23
uh help you know improve the operations
2:25
of the server Center but I think is very
2:29
um
2:29
uh eye-opening is you know okay
2:33
everybody now understands that um you
2:36
know hospitals are are you know twice as
2:38
expensive as as a surgery center uh on
2:41
average
2:42
so you know take
2:44
that surgery Center’s um Revenue that
2:47
they generated you know up to this point
2:49
in time and
2:51
multiply that by two that’s how much
2:54
um that would have cost uh the Health
2:56
Care System uh if those procedures were
2:58
done at the hospital
3:00
um and you cut it in half which is you
3:02
know the same as the revenue of the
3:03
surgery center that’s how much money a
3:05
surgery center has saved
3:07
um the healthcare infrastructure right
3:10
so
3:11
um it’s not necessarily something that
3:13
would improve
3:15
um this you know the operations of the
3:17
surgery center
3:19
um but I I’ve done that exercise with my
3:23
team and I think it’s it’s eye-opening
3:26
to them because then they realize
3:28
um wow we’re you know we’re not only
3:30
helping you know our patients we’re not
3:32
only giving our surgeons uh you know a
3:35
good day
3:36
um but we’re also helping to lower the
3:39
cost of health care for Americans
3:42
so yeah I would answered um you know
3:46
administrators or service centers to go
3:47
through that exercise I think the team
3:49
would really like it one thing that I
3:51
was thinking about that I’m not sure is
3:53
possible in a week but I think can be
3:55
started in a week was to just be an
3:57
advocate for your Center you know we
3:59
still hear on the local level the state
4:01
level the national level a lot of not
4:03
just uncertainty but people who don’t
4:05
know about ASCS in particular you know
4:07
and the advantages that they can provide
4:09
to patients in terms of better patient
4:11
experience lower costs all of those
4:13
things that we in the industry kind of
4:15
inherently understand from working here
4:16
so I think if you can Advocate a little
4:19
on behalf of your Center on behalf you
4:21
know that Advocates on behalf of the
4:22
industry as well and that could mean a
4:25
little social media it could mean some
4:27
volunteer work it could mean giving a
4:30
lawmaker an official a tour of your
4:31
facility so they see you know you’re not
4:33
just some random facility you’re a
4:35
state-of-the-art you know Center that
4:37
has all the things that you might expect
4:38
to have these procedures done safely I
4:41
think those things will go a long way
4:42
and hopefully as we kind of build the
4:45
understanding of the ASC industry at the
4:47
local and at the national level we’ll
4:49
get more policies that are favorable to
4:51
our industry but uh again I just can’t
4:55
reiterate the most important thing you
4:57
can do and you can start this today is
4:59
even if you have to do a simple website
5:01
or even just when you’re dealing with
5:03
your patients be 100 transparent
5:06
just tell them your good points and your
5:08
bad points you know I mean you don’t
5:10
want to burn yourself up but don’t try
5:12
to hide things just just be honest about
5:14
what’s going to happen what it’s going
5:16
to cost and what their expectations are
5:19
and what your expectations are too and
5:21
make it a partnership that that’s
5:23
probably more important than anything to
5:25
do and the other thing is I I go back to
5:28
this
5:29
a lot of centers will not do this profit
5:32
sharing with your employees you have no
5:34
idea on a quarterly basis we do that in
5:37
a check we hand it to our employees how
5:40
much that means to them because they are
5:42
involved in what’s going on they know
5:46
my pre-op nurses know that crayons cost
5:48
65 cents a piece so they go in and they
5:52
ask the child are you going to play with
5:54
your mom’s phone or are you going to
5:55
call her because they don’t want to
5:56
waste the 65 cents because for every
5:59
dollar it’s five cents in their pocket
6:01
and we cost life here we’re on a true
6:03
EMR we’re paperless and and so we cost
6:07
every penny and we know when the patient
6:09
walks out the door exactly what our
6:12
profit margin is so if you can get your
6:14
employees to be owners in the business
6:15
you’ll make money
6:17
I would say have your ASC if they have
6:21
not joined they need to join their local
6:23
Chamber of Commerce
6:25
this is kind of like the easy button and
6:29
a lot of ASCS are missing out on this
6:31
they’re providing Essential Health Care
6:34
in their community
6:35
and so you need to be tapped into your
6:37
community and what a great way to
6:41
establish connections with Business
6:43
Leaders
6:45
um in the elected officials in your
6:49
community your um your local Council or
6:52
supervisors who often go up the chain to
6:56
the state or even the federal level so
6:59
huge connections huge opportunity to
7:02
build your leadership skills and
7:05
honestly when they’re going to have
7:08
conversations about health care in the
7:10
community now you’re a part of it and
7:13
it’s just it’s just a huge opportunity
7:16
and so easy
7:18
for your ASC that uh that’s just um
7:22
you know a great marketing tool
7:25
one thing from a medication management
7:28
perspective is having a consultant
7:30
pharmacist and whether you have a
7:32
consultant pharmacist at the very
7:34
minimum having a dedicated staff member
7:37
that can help you with your medication
7:39
management that will lead to standard of
7:42
care best practice
7:44
preventing drug errors uh having you
7:48
know a safe effective way to give
7:51
medications in your surgery center and
7:54
you know allocating the staff to that so
7:56
if the consultant is coming in and
7:59
helping with those processes or the
8:01
dedicated staff member is is given time
8:04
to work on those I think that’s the
8:07
simplest you know answer to walk away
8:10
with and and for people whether that is
8:13
the owners of the surgery centers or the
8:16
providers knowing how important and how
8:19
time consuming the medication process
8:21
can be
8:22
so I think I would say it’s 2022 let’s
8:26
Embrace technology there are a lot of
8:28
surgery centers out there who
8:31
um uh I see scheduling on spreadsheets I
8:34
see not taking advantage of you know I
8:37
we use our phones for everything today
8:39
and there are so many opportunities to
8:43
introduce technology again thinking
8:44
about revenue cycle that can help us be
8:47
more efficient so whether it’s adopting
8:49
a way to text a patient either clinical
8:51
information or financial information
8:54
adopting a method for them to
8:56
communicate with you electronically
8:57
including payer paying their bills
8:59
electronically I would look for those I
9:02
would try to take advantage of those it
9:05
really exists everywhere else in our
9:06
life and I think from my experience in
9:08
visiting surgery centers it seems to be
9:10
a place where there’s a there’s a nice
9:12
opportunity for us to take advantage of
9:14
what’s out there I present the surgeons
9:16
with the data right that that is
9:18
probably the most important thing you
9:20
can do obviously you do your homework
9:21
ahead of time but put in the time and
9:24
effort to Summer summarize your raw
9:26
implant purchase history and and to an
9:28
easy understanding list of you know
9:30
comparing
9:31
Apples to Apples you know the the the
9:34
same products that you’ve got there to
9:36
to the same products that are you know
9:39
that you benchmarked against the usage
9:41
the CPT codes by the way and and the
9:44
reimbursement which we talked about
9:45
earlier put all of that together and
9:48
talk about how that sort of affects the
9:51
whole business outcome but you start
9:53
with presenting the surgeons with data
9:55
you start with putting the data together
9:56
in reports but start with sitting down
9:58
with your surgeons after you’ve done the
10:00
homework and talk to them you know
10:02
they’re going to appreciate it as I said
10:03
their owners in the business they want
10:05
the best outcomes they’re going to make
10:07
the best decisions for their patients
10:09
and for their Center but I would do that
10:10
I would go to the to the data get the
10:13
data from your whatever you’ve got in
10:15
your facility of hstmv or whatever
10:17
you’re using and and do the other
10:19
homework do that and then go to your
10:20
surgeons and um you know make a plan
10:23
with your surgeons and and do it as a
10:25
team and I think that’s the best way to
10:26
and and one of the things that that all
10:29
surgery centers if they’re not doing it
10:30
this week they should plan for in my
10:32
opinion ask your most important person
10:36
in each department
10:38
what their biggest challenge is
10:41
and listen to their answer
10:44
whether it’s something personal or
10:46
whether it’s something work related
10:48
you don’t have to fix it but just listen
10:51
for the answer
10:53
set up a meeting look to find a way
10:55
where someone else can take a leadership
10:57
position to step up right to promote
11:00
them into growing and spreading their
11:03
wings look to find ways to highlight
11:06
positives if you want to change a
11:09
behavior you don’t focus on the negative
11:11
it’s not through punishment it’s through
11:14
promoting the positive behavior that you
11:17
want to see
11:18
well take them out go bowling
11:21
yeah right get to know who you you are
11:25
working with because I promise you it’ll
11:27
be returned to you and tenfold patient
11:31
experience
11:33
um because patient experience I mean
11:34
this can this can go in multiple
11:36
different directions
11:38
um but when you have when your patient
11:40
experiences a really good surgical day
11:43
and they’re going to go out and tell
11:45
their friends and that’s word of mouth
11:46
right that’s going to bring more
11:48
patience into your facility I truly
11:51
believe word of mouth is probably your
11:52
best marking your marketing strategy for
11:55
any Center
11:57
um not only this your patient experience
11:59
is going to stem from your surgeon
12:02
leadership so from a surgeon standpoint
12:05
no matter if they want to be a leader or
12:09
not when they slap that MD on that
12:12
behind their name they’re automatically
12:14
a leader and so that it’s huge for
12:16
surgeons to understand that if if
12:18
they’re good leaders to their staff
12:20
their staff are going to have a more
12:23
positive day and they’re going to give
12:26
the patients more positive experience as
12:28
well
12:29
so it’s kind of like a Snowball Effect I
12:31
would say in any surgery center a great
12:34
surgery team is what makes
12:37
an ASU successful
12:39
my advice
12:42
is leaders
12:44
you must show your appreciation to your
12:46
staff
12:49
means happy patients and it it all
12:52
translates to increased patient
12:54
satisfaction and better outcomes just
12:57
being on the business side of it
13:00
the most important thing I think to do
13:02
is to look at your gpos and your vendor
13:05
contracts make sure that they’re updated
13:07
make sure that they’re
13:09
on contract they fall off you know
13:11
they’re occasionally they’ll go every
13:13
you know so many years and then they’ll
13:15
fall off having someone who’s
13:17
knowledgeable in and watching pricing on
13:19
items I think is one of the biggest cost
13:21
savings on day-to-day purchases
13:25
um you know if you know that you know a
13:27
pack of towels is 32.96 and the next
13:31
time somebody tries to order them
13:32
they’re 69 well
13:34
you know and that’s that’s the kind of
13:37
things that we try to do
13:39
um you know there’s a thousand items but
13:41
on the day-to-day items is where you
13:44
really spend your money so keeping an
13:46
eye on that kind of stuff
13:49
